The world's most magnificent mosque, desert dunes that glow copper at sunset, Formula 1's Yas Marina Circuit, and the Louvre's desert satellite — Abu Dhabi is Dubai's more refined neighbour.
While Dubai dominates the headlines, Abu Dhabi — the capital and largest emirate of the UAE — offers a more contemplative, cultural, and architecturally sophisticated experience. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its 82 domes and capacity for 41,000 worshippers, is arguably the most beautiful building constructed in the 21st century. The Louvre Abu Dhabi — Jean Nouvel's disc-shaped museum under a geometric dome that casts a "rain of light" — houses art spanning 5,000 years of human civilisation across all cultures. And then there's Yas Island — Ferrari World (home to Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster at 240 km/h), Warner Bros. World, and the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit.
For travellers from Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, Abu Dhabi is served by direct Air India, IndiGo, and Air Arabia flights from multiple Indian cities. Luxytrix crafts Abu Dhabi tour packages tailored to every traveller type — families from Ahmedabad, Pune, and Surat who want theme park experiences alongside cultural visits; couples from Jaipur and Chandigarh who choose romantic desert dinners under the stars at Al Ain's sand dunes; history enthusiasts from Lucknow and Kolkata who want to explore Qasr Al Hosn (Abu Dhabi's oldest building) and the Al Ain Oasis (UNESCO); and F1 fans from Indore and Bangalore planning around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix each November.
Abu Dhabi Fast Facts: Abu Dhabi has been ranked the world's most livable city multiple times. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to visit and welcomes all faiths. Abu Dhabi owns 90% of UAE's oil reserves and 6-8% of world oil reserves. The UAE Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar at 3.67 AED.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the world's six largest mosques and almost certainly its most beautiful. Built between 1996 and 2007, it features 82 white marble domes, 1,000 columns clad in semi-precious stone inlay, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (spanning 5,627 sq metres, made by 1,200 weavers). The main prayer hall chandelier — 10 metres in diameter — is adorned with 40 million Swarovski crystals. Non-Muslim visitors are welcomed with appropriate dress (abayas provided free at the entrance for women). The reflected pool views at blue hour and the moonlit white marble at night are among the UAE's most otherworldly photographic experiences.
Yas Island is Abu Dhabi's 25 sq km entertainment destination off the western coast of the emirate. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the world's largest indoor theme park — Formula Rossa (240 km/h), the Flying Aces loop-the-loop, and the Scuderia Challenge driving simulator make it essential for speed enthusiasts. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is the world's first Warner Bros. theme park, bringing DC Universe superheroes and Looney Tunes to life. Yas Waterworld and the Yas Marina Circuit (F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix venue) complete the island's portfolio. The Clymb Abu Dhabi is home to the world's largest indoor skydiving chamber and the world's tallest indoor climbing wall.
Jean Nouvel's extraordinary museum opened in 2017 on Saadiyat Island — a UNESCO Creative City hub that will eventually house the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum. The Louvre Abu Dhabi's permanent collection spans world art from prehistoric cave paintings through to the 21st century, with loans from 13 French national institutions including the Louvre Paris. The building itself — a vast disc 180 metres in diameter — sits above the sea, with water channels that visitors walk over, and a perforated dome that filters daylight into the "rain of light" effect inside.
Abu Dhabi's hinterland offers dramatic red-orange dunes that rival any desert in the world. Our evening desert safaris from Abu Dhabi include dune bashing in 4x4 vehicles, sandboarding, camel rides, traditional henna painting, and a candlelit dinner in a Bedouin-style camp with live oud music and falconry demonstrations. Al Ain, Abu Dhabi's UNESCO-listed garden city (160 km inland), offers the Al Ain Oasis (3,000 years of ancient falaj irrigation system), the Jebel Hafeet mountain drive, and the Al Ain National Museum.

Abu Dhabi is a car-centric city with limited public transport. Taxis are metered and affordable; Careem (UAE's Uber) is widely available. Renting a car is recommended for Al Ain day trips. The Abu Dhabi-Dubai bus service (AED 25) is a good budget option for the 90-minute intercity connection.
