Coorg Travel Guide

Scotland of India — misty coffee estates, silver waterfalls, spice gardens and warrior heritage

Overview

Coorg, officially known as Kodagu, is a lush highland district nestled in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Often called the Scotland of India, this verdant paradise is draped in coffee and tea plantations that perfume the cool mountain air. Coorg is home to the proud Kodava community — known for their unique cuisine, vibrant festivals, and centuries-old warrior traditions. Abbey Falls is one of Karnataka's most photogenic cascades, tumbling 70 feet through dense jungle amid the sound of chirping birds. Raja's Seat, a historic garden perched on a cliff, offers spectacular sunset views across rolling green valleys and mist-laden peaks. The Namdroling Monastery — also called the Golden Temple — is a magnificent Tibetan Buddhist complex in Bylakuppe, one of India's largest Tibetan settlements. Dubare Elephant Camp on the banks of the Cauvery River offers rare morning bathing sessions with rescued elephants. Trekking enthusiasts head to Tadiandamol — the highest peak in Coorg at 1,748 metres — for panoramic views over the ghats. Rafting on the Barapole River, visiting ancient Iguthappa Temple at Kakkabe, and exploring local coffee estate homestays round out a perfect Coorg escape. The cuisine — featuring pork curry, bamboo shoot dishes, and strong black coffee — is an experience in itself and reflects Coorg's distinct cultural identity.

  Best Time to Visit Coorg

October to March offers the most pleasant weather with clear skies and cool temperatures ideal for trekking and sightseeing. The monsoon season from June to September transforms Coorg into an emerald wonderland, though some roads may become slippery. April and May can be warm but the coffee blossoms fill the estates with a jasmine-like fragrance. December to February is peak season when the mist hangs low over the plantations creating magical mornings.
